For the past few years Nevenka has presented lectures at Occidental College in Los Angeles, to acquaint world music students with Bulgarian music. We’ve decided to open this to the public, and so we are presenting our first ever virtual lecture/demonstration: an introduction to the fascinating and beautiful music of Bulgaria.

Topics will include: four of the geographical regions of Bulgaria and the musical styles associated with each region; traditional Bulgarian instrumentation, harmonies and rhythms; choral arrangements of folk melodies from the 20th century to the present; and a Q&A discussion at the end. We will play audio and video recordings to accompany the lecture.
